Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen expressed deep feelings of embarrassment following the humiliating 7-2 defeat to Bayern Munich.
Serge Gnabry struck four times as Spurs were ripped apart in front of their home fans, becoming the first English team ever to concede seven goals in the Champions League.
And speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, Vertonghen explained how the thrashing left him feeling personally ashamed.
“I feel extremely hurt, I feel ashamed, all negative thoughts are going through my head, it’s embarrassing to stand here in front of you guys,” the Belgian said.
“It’s tough. I’m not talking about other players, I’m talking about myself, about my feeling to watch everyone around the club. It’s a very bad result and I don’t want to speak too much.”
Nevertheless, Vertonghen issued a message of togetherness to Spurs fans and promised the team will overcome their shocking defeat.
“Keep supporting us,” he added. “I believe we have the people in the team to overcome this situation.
“This is a bad incident but this group is together. We have to stay together. We will turn this around. I’m not walking away from this, that’s why I’m speaking to you guys, we have to take responsibility and we will.
“The next game is in the Premier League on Saturday and that can be a good chances to get rid of this feeling.”
Tottenham actually went ahead on the night through Heung-min Son before Joshua Kimmich levelled things up with a sensational strike.
Bayern took the lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to a superb finish from Robert Lewandowski.
The Poland striker picked up the loose ball at the edge of the area and swivelled to fire into the bottom corner.
Bayern extended their advantage eight minutes after the break as Gnabry broke at pace and fired into the bottom corner.
And Spurs’ misery was compounded as Gnabry struck again two minutes later, capitalising after Harry Winks lost possession.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men were handed a lifeline as the referee pointed to the penalty spot for a foul on Danny Rose, with Harry Kane reducing the deficit to 4-2 on the hour mark.
Any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Gnabry sealed his hat-trick in the 83rd minute after racing beyond the Spurs defence and slotting past Hugo Lloris from 15 yards.
There was still time for Lewandowski to side-foot home a sixth for the German giants and Gnabry was able to add his fourth – and a seventh for Bayern – in the 88th minute.
